Grandmothers for Reproductive Rights (GRR): Statement on the Supreme Court Nomination.

July 29, 2018

The Trump administration has made good its promise to turn the clock back on reproductive rights and many other civil and human rights with the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, an ultra-conservative judge who has opposed women’s reproductive health care including both abortion and contraceptive care.

Relying on wisdom and clarity from decades of lived experience, Grandmothers for Reproductive Rights will oppose this nominee whose judicial record demonstrates that he will continue to chip away if not overturn Roe v. Wade which established that the constitutional right to privacy extends to a woman’s right to make her own personal medical decisions. We will not go backward to a time when we saw thousands of women including friends and family members suffer and die from the effects of unsafe, illegal abortion.

We also know that opinion polls over the past forty-five years have consistently confirmed that the majority of people in this country do not want Roe v. Wade overturned. With this in mind, we will call on to Senator Susan Collins and Senator Angus King to oppose this nomination.

Because we have been in this fight from the beginning, Grandmothers for Reproductive Rights knows that we will face a powerful, well-funded opposition who will stop at nothing to revoke all reproductive rights at both the federal and, increasingly, state level. We will continue to advocate forcefully and diligently against this nominee in what is shaping up to be the fight of a lifetime.
Grandmothers for Reproductive Rights (GRR) works, through education and advocacy, to secure for younger generations access to the reproductive rights, justice and health care for which our generation fought so hard.
