GRR goes to Washington, DC.

May 13, 2016

May, 2016. GRR representatives join advocates from 28 states in Act for Women’s Advocacy Day. We meet with members of Congress to ask for support of the Women’s Health Protection Act. This proposed federal law, currently supported by 128 Representatives and 33 Senators, would prohibit states from imposing restrictions on abortion that apply to no similar medical care, interfere with patient’s personal decision making, and block access to safe, legal abortion care.

Since 2010 politicians across the country have passed over 300 anti-abortion laws. Many of these laws are aimed at closing clinic doors and preventing abortion providers from offering critical reproductive health services. If the Women’s Health Protection Act passes, it will end efforts in all 50 states to deny women their right, affirmed in 1973, to access the full range of reproductive health services.

The Maine delegation, including GRR members, meets with staff from Senator Colllins and King’s offices to request that they co-sponsor the bill.  Rep. Chillie Pingree gets a big “thank you” — and a signature GRR potholder — for her support of the bill.
